Get ready for class, because Hillman College is reopening its doors! Netflix has officially announced a reboot of the beloved sitcom “A Different World,” introducing a new generation of students while honoring the legacy that made the original series a cornerstone of Black television.
The new series will follow Deborah Wayne, the daughter of fan-favorite couple Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at Hillman. With the weight of her parents’ legacy on her shoulders, Deborah sets out to define her own path — balancing friendship, self-discovery, and the complexities of college life in a rapidly changing world.
This next chapter captures the same warmth, humor, and social awareness that defined the original series, reimagined for today’s audience.

Netflix’s reboot reunites Debbie Allen, the original show’s director and producer, who returns as an executive producer and episode director. She’ll be joined by acclaimed creators Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, both known for their powerful storytelling and ability to blend culture with heart.
The series will be showrun by Felicia Pride (Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy), who promises to bring a contemporary edge while keeping the same values that made A Different World a cultural milestone.
The cast features rising talents like Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, alongside Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and Kennedi Reece — all bringing fresh energy to the Hillman legacy.
When A Different World first aired from 1987 to 1993, it became a cultural movement — showcasing the beauty of HBCU life, Black excellence, and the importance of community. The series tackled topics that were ahead of its time — from racial identity and social justice to love, faith, and education.
This reboot arrives at the perfect moment, as HBCUs and young Black voices take center stage in conversations about representation, empowerment, and pride.
“Hillman College was more than a setting — it was a symbol,” said showrunner Felicia Pride. “Now, we get to build on that foundation for a new generation.”
Netflix’s A Different World reboot isn’t just bringing back a classic — it’s reviving a movement. With its mix of familiar roots and new voices, the series will reintroduce the power of education, culture, and self-discovery to a whole new generation.
✨ The world has changed — but Hillman’s heart remains the same. Welcome back to “A Different World.”
