NBA champion Harrison Barnes has spent more than a decade building an impressive career on the basketball court. Now, the 34-year-old veteran is making headlines for an entirely different kind of move: bank ownership.

Barnes has acquired Community State Bank in Paton, Iowa, through Barnes Bancorp, Inc., an entity he chiefly owns. Recent reports say Barnes committed approximately $25 million of his own money to the venture. The transaction has been completed, according to Community State Bank CEO Craig Marquardt.

For Barnes, however, buying a bank isn’t simply another celebrity investment. It’s the culmination of years spent studying finance, serving in banking leadership positions and developing a deeper understanding of how community financial institutions can affect local economies.

From NBA Champion to Bank Owner

Barnes grew up in Ames, Iowa, before becoming one of America’s top high-school basketball prospects. After playing at the University of North Carolina, he was selected seventh overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 2012 NBA Draft.

His professional résumé eventually included an NBA championship with Golden State in 2015 and an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in 2016.

But while Barnes was building his basketball career, he was also developing an interest in business and banking.

The American Bankers Association’s ABA Banking Journal reported in June that Barnes had already served as a two-time bank director and viewed owning an Iowa bank as one of his long-term goals. He was also pursuing additional banking education through the Iowa School of Banking.

That makes his Community State Bank acquisition considerably different from simply putting money into a company and waiting for a return.

Barnes has been preparing for this.

Why Community Banking?

One of the more interesting aspects of Barnes’ investment is his focus on a relatively small community institution rather than a flashy technology startup or national financial company.

Community State Bank is based in Paton, Iowa, and is celebrating approximately 70 years in business. When plans for the acquisition became public earlier this summer, bank leadership emphasized that Barnes had a genuine interest in community banking and reinvesting in Iowa.

Barnes has also spoken about the importance of local banks and the role they play in providing access to capital and supporting communities.

The acquisition went through a formal regulatory process. A public notice filed in June stated that Barnes Bancorp intended to become a bank holding company and acquire control of Community State Bank, subject to Federal Reserve review.

By August, the transaction was complete.

A $25 Million Commitment

The figure attracting the most attention is $25 million.

Recent reporting from the San Antonio Express-News and other outlets describes Barnes’ investment in the bank as approximately $25 million.

There is also a notable regulatory filing connected to Barnes Bancorp. An August 20, 2026 Form D filing lists Barnes Bancorp, Inc. as an Iowa corporation operating in commercial banking, with Harrison Barnes identified as an executive officer and director. The filing lists a $25 million equity offering, though it showed $0 sold at the time of that filing.

So while “$25 million” is widely being reported as Barnes’ personal investment, it’s useful to distinguish that reporting from the separate SEC filing concerning Barnes Bancorp’s $25 million securities offering.

The Bank Isn’t Being Turned Upside Down

Perhaps most important for customers and employees, Barnes’ arrival isn’t expected to mean a dramatic overhaul.

Community State Bank CEO Craig Marquardt said the staff and management team are remaining in place, and the bank continues operating under the Community State Bank name.

Barnes also recently visited the Paton location to meet employees and introduce members of the bank’s new board.

Among those surrounding Barnes is Jeff Plagge, a former Iowa Superintendent of Banking who has also served as managing director of Barnes & Company. Plagge became the new chair of Community State Bank following the acquisition.

That decision demonstrates another important element of Barnes’ strategy: he isn’t attempting to become a banker overnight simply because he has the money to purchase a financial institution. He has surrounded himself with experienced banking professionals.

More Than an Athlete

Athletes investing their earnings isn’t unusual.

Restaurants, clothing brands, technology startups, entertainment companies and real estate have all become familiar destinations for professional sports money.

Owning a regulated community bank while still playing professional basketball is another level entirely.

Barnes’ move represents something potentially more significant: converting wealth generated through professional sports into ownership of an institution that can participate directly in the economic development of a community.

Community banks provide loans to homeowners, farmers and small businesses. They help entrepreneurs access capital and keep financial decision-making connected to the communities being served.

For Barnes, that connection appears particularly important because he’s investing back into Iowa—the state where his journey began.

Harrison Barnes Is Building His Next Chapter Before Basketball Ends

One of the biggest lessons from Barnes’ story may be the timing.

He didn’t wait until retirement to start thinking about life after basketball.

Years before purchasing Community State Bank, Barnes was learning about financial institutions, serving on bank boards, studying the industry and developing relationships with experienced bankers. The acquisition appears to be the result of that long-term preparation rather than a sudden $25 million impulse.

Even as he continues his NBA career with San Antonio, Barnes is already establishing what could become a major second act.

The basketball eventually stops.

Ownership doesn’t have to.

And with Community State Bank now under Barnes Bancorp, Harrison Barnes isn’t simply investing the money he earned playing basketball.
